Parish Nurse

My Story

Professional

Jennie Johnson, RN-BC, PhD spent the first half of her nursing career taking care of heart attack and stroke patients and the second half preventing them. She counseled thousands of patients to move toward a healthier lifestyle and graduated from Loyola University, Chicago in 2012 studying the motivation to change harmful behaviors. The past few years Jennie was a Kaplan faculty teacher helping to prepare graduate nursing students to pass their registered nurse exam. Jennie developed and taught a variety of programs for people of all ages on health related topics and was the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women, Keynote Speaker in Spokane, Washington, 2016.

Volunteer Service:

Since 2013 she has served her Lutheran Church in northern Idaho as a parish nurse helping members navigate through a myriad of challenging situations. She has counseled hundreds of people to safely care for themselves at  home during a COVID infection to avoid serious complications and hospitalization.

She believes that every Christian church across this nation would benefit from having a registered nurse on hand to mentor them. Her new book: Helping the Hurting: Nursing Ministry in the Body of Christ will be released in February of 2022.

It’s much easier than most nurses think and invaluable to pastors and members. Jennie uses her art of storytelling and her experience to dramatize how one nurse can make a huge difference in the lives of his or her members.

The Bible verse that guides her life is: But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Matthew 6:33.

Personally:

Jennie and John live in northern Idaho. Their great joy comes from time spent with their 3 children and 10 grandchildren.

Her favorite stories are the ones that take her away to a distant time or place. Sitting in the sand… with a book in her hand… is the best idea of a perfect day.

Regarding a good book:  Whether it’s a riveting book about climbing Mount Everest, growth in my faith or health, a dashing romance or even a sweet story that I read to my grandchildren… I’m hooked!
